06 | Sketching + Concept Thesis (Partner Pairing)

Concept

Thesis

Description

A concept thesis is an important step in starting a collaborative partner project. We will use this time to combine ideas and arrive at the conceptual directions of our projects.

Instructions

Start by sharing the ideas that each partner brought to the brainstorming and what conclusions we arrived at by the end of the session. Take time to figure out shared interests and begin to draft both a project name and a thesis statement of what you will build.

Deliverables

At the end of this activity, each partnership should have a draft of a project name and a draft of a project concept thesis. Combine these into your Design Journal and add it to task on Managebac.

Prompt

Students will work in their project groups to generate initial ideas about their concept in the form of sketches.

Instructions

Part 1: In your group, begin discussing your possible concepts. Each group member should participate to get their ideas heard. Settle on an overall concept that encompasses the project criteria.

Part 2: Next, students should begin to develop initial sketches. Each group member should do their own sketch to communicate how they picture the concept. These initial sketches should be used to record initial ideas, gain consensus within your group, and demonstrate specific aspects of an idea.

Part 3: Once each sketch is complete, share your sketches with your instructor.

Deliverables

Upload your sketches to the Responses tab above.

Sketch Assignment 1: 3 Clothing Items

SKETCH YOUR FASHION

Iteration: a procedure in which repetition of a sequence of operations yields results successively closer to the desired result

An integral part of the design process is iteration, which is the way that designers create multiple versions (or prototypes) of an idea in order to continually improve upon their idea. After each new prototype, we use reflection and feedback to gain new insights on our design in order to make decisions about how to move forward with our idea.

Instructions

In this assignment, you will reflect on your 3 clothing sketches from the previous assignment. Which clothing sketch are you most interested in exploring further through a futuristic lens? Select one of the styles of your garment from your previous assignment and sketch it 3 times (or more), each with a futuristic modification. Use detail, color, and pattern descriptions to help the viewer understand what your design would really look like.

For example, if you chose a hijab design, one iteration could feature a device that keeps the wearer's head cool as the earth heats up from global climate change.

Deliverable

3 iterative sketches of one article of clothing from your chosen country, each featuring a futuristic conceptual addition. Label the drawings with the futuristic addition. Share the images in your Project folder.
