04 | World Building: Future Fictions (optional)

Part I: World Building

Purpose: In this short activity, students will be introduced to basic strategies and tools used to imagine and construct future worlds for the purpose of identifying potential cyborg enhancements that could be used to enhance, adapt, and communicate in these future scenarios.


Instructions:  Before moving on to Part 2 where you'll be creating a digital montage using canva, you will need to consider different aspects of your world. With a clear vision of this world in mind, begin to answer the following questions. These can be answered through text or drawings. Try to answer at least 8 of these questions:

Geography

  • Is there access to water? Fresh water? Salt Water? 
  • How is water utilized or not utilized in this world? 
  • What is the landscape like?
  • What is the climate? Is there extreme weather?
  • What kind of animals and plants live here? 

Culture

  • What kind of government exists in this world? 
  • Who holds power and resources here? What resources are the most valuable? 
  • What forms of entertainment exist in this world? Is art important here? 

Social Classes

  • What kind of foods and drinks are most consumed here? Why? 
  • What do people do for work here? What are the most common professions? 

Technology

  • What technology do people use to communicate? Do our current communication tools work in this world? 
  • How do people get around? What forms of transportation are most useful? 
  • What powers technology in this world? Water? Wood? The Sun?

Future

Fiction

Description

We will create montages using photo editing software (or physically by cutting and pasting) of a future world. Imagining either a utopia or dystopia and describe how we arrived at this future. 

Instructions  

Use Canva to generate a Fictional Future World. 

Start with a blank canvas with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 or greater. 

Use high resolutions (large pixel count) images to build your montage

Consider perspective, color, brightness, and scale

Try multiple different options to determine which best tells your narrative

Deliverables

Create a post to showcase your image montage of a future fictional world. 

Include your answers from Part 1: World Building into the text field of your post.
