Treehouse

Design Sprint

Prompt

Welcome to our treehouse design studio! In this project, you will collaborate to create a treehouse, starting with a shared tree trunk and adding branches to showcase your unique designs. The primary function of your treehouse is up to you—whether it’s a residence, gallery, playground, tea house, greenhouse, umbrella making shop, studio, library, observatory, or any other creative idea you envision.

Materials

  • Pre-built tree trunk (provided by the teacher)
  • Precedent research slides (provided on the platform)
  • Sketching materials (paper, pencils, markers)
  • Lo-fi prototyping materials (cardboard, craft sticks, glue, scissors, tape, fabric, etc.)
  • Whiteboard and markers

Duration

  • Total Project Time: ~5 hours
    • Precedent Research: 30 minutes
    • Brainstorming: 30 minutes
    • Sketching and Feedback: 30 minutes
    • Prototyping: 2-3 hours
    • Assembly and Reflection: 30 minutes

Instructions

  1. Precedent Research (30 minutes)

    • Review the provided precedent research slides to understand different types of treehouses that have been built. Take notes on any ideas or designs that inspire you.
  2. Brainstorming (30 minutes)

    • Read through the different design concepts on the slideshow to find inspiration.
    • Individually list out multiple ideas for your treehouse's function and design.
    • Share your ideas on the whiteboard. The teacher will facilitate a discussion and group similar ideas together.
    • Pair up with classmates who have similar interests and consolidate your ideas into two main concepts.
  3. Sketching and Feedback (30 min)

    • In pairs, sketch out your two consolidated treehouse concepts.
    • Share your sketches with another group and provide each other with constructive feedback.
    • Based on the feedback, refine your ideas and choose one final concept to pursue.
  4. Prototyping (2-3 hours)

    • Use the lo-fi materials to build a prototype of your treehouse branch and design.
    • Ensure your prototype can be securely attached to the shared tree trunk.
  5. Assembly and Reflection (30 minutes)

    • Once all groups have completed their prototypes, gather to attach each branch and treehouse to the trunk, creating a collaborative tree.
    • Reflect on the process:
      • How does each treehouse relate to the others?
      • What were the main challenges and successes during the project?

Deliverables

  • Final treehouse concept sketch
  • Lo-fi prototype of the treehouse branch and design
  • Final collaborative tree assembly
