SAWING + SANDING SAFETY

The blades of the coping saws are sharp and should be treated with caution.

Whenever working with power tools, we should wear protective eyewear to prevent any wood chips from getting in our eyes.

DRILLING THE CO2 CARTRIDGE HOLE

Each pinewood block needs a 7/8" diameter hole drilled in the back of it to house the CO2 cartridge.

Use a jig to hold the block in place against the plate of a drill press when drilling.

TRACE THE PROFILE OF YOUR DESIGN ONTO THE BLOCK

Clamping the block in a bench vise will hold it still for sawing and sanding. This will be like giving yourself a third hand to work with.

Cut large straight sections off of the block with the coping saw. Small detail will be made with the Dremel and sand paper.

SANDING CURVED SURFACES

Begin sanding with the lowest grit number to remove the most wood with rough sanding. The higher the grit number, the smoother the surface will become.

DREMEL FOR FAST SANDING

Be careful not to cut into the wood that will hold the CO2 cartridge in place during the race.

Carving and sanding your car design will take multiple studio sessions to complete.
