Cultural Textiles

Dina Chehab

In Cultural Textiles, students will harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to embark on a virtual globetrotting adventure, exploring the world through patterns and learning about the different values and meanings visually encoded in them.

Throughout this sprint, students will self-reflect and define their own life values, translating these ideas into unique visual patterns. Using AI tools, they will generate and refine their designs, experimenting with symbolism, repetition, and cultural references to create patterned garments that express identity and personal narrative.

Students will then move into digital fabrication, transforming their patterns into physical forms. Through laser cutting, they will create custom stencils and textile components. Using 3D printing, they may design wearable elements, embellishments, or structural garment features that extend their patterns into dimensional form.

Finally, students will apply hand-printing techniques for fabric to transfer their designs onto textiles, combining traditional craft with emerging technologies. The result is a collection of garments and wearable pieces that capture the essence of their values, culture, and diversity—bridging AI, digital tools, and hands-on making into one cohesive creative process.
