Skill Lab: Motion

Dina Chehab

Motion

Objective:

Students will experiment with different types of motion and observe how these movements interact with light to create dynamic visual effects.

Materials:

  • Flashlights or small LED lights
  • String or thread
  • Small objects to attach to the string (e.g., paper shapes, lightweight toys)
  • Small handheld fans or motorized turntables (optional, for rotation)
  • Transparent or translucent materials (e.g., acetate, cellophane)
  • Cardboard or paper discs
  • Tape or glue
  • Scissors
  • Pencils and paper for sketching

Steps:

  1. Explore the different type of motion: rotation, swinging, rising/falling, layered movement).

  2. Sketch the Mechanism:

    • Design: Begin by sketching your ideas for the mechanisms that will create the different types of motion
    • Details: Include details on how the light will be attached and how it will interact with the motion.
  3. Build the Mechanism:

    • Materials: Gather cardboard, other building materials, and any additional tools needed.
    • Construct: Use the materials to build your mechanisms according to your sketches. Ensure the light source is securely attached and can move as planned.
  4. Test the Mechanism:

    • Set Up: Position your mechanism and light source in a suitable environment for testing.
    • Observe: Run the mechanism and observe how the light interacts with the motion, noting changes in light patterns and shadows.
  5. Document the Process:

    • Photos: Take clear photos of your completed mechanism, light effects, and any interesting visual patterns.
    • Video: Record a short video showing the motion and how the light interacts with it. Highlight any key observations or effects.

Outcome:

By the end of this activity, students should have a clearer understanding of how different types of motion can influence the way light interacts with objects, shapes, and colors. They will be better equipped to incorporate dynamic elements into their kinetic light sculpture designs.

Post the recorded video along with a couple of photos in the responses tab
